Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is 15 kilometers southwest of the Dutch capital. It is situated in the Haarlemmermeerpolder and that is also where the name Schiphol comes from. A part of the former lake was named Schiphol, but what the name means is not completely clear. Some claim that it was a place where many ships perished. It is more probable that the name comes from ‘scheepschaal’, a ditch where ships were hauled from one lake to the other. Amsterdam Airport is the lowest lying major airport in the world. It is three to five meters below sea level.

Schiphol is the fourth largest airport in Europe when measured in total passengers (after Londen Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle and Frankfurt). In 2004 42.5 million passengers traveled through Schiphol. Amsterdam Airport already frequently gets the award of ‘best airport in the world’. The British business newspaper Business Traveller has gladly called Schiphol the ‘best airport in the Europe’ 22 times since 1980.

Rotterdam Airport was originally named Vliegveld Zestienhoven (Sixteen Courts Airport). The airport was opened in 1956 and was initially reasonably successful. In the 70s the airport was less successful and was almost closed down. The tide turned with the economic recovery in the 90s and it was decided to keep the airport in the same place.
At and around the airport there is work being done on developing the RTM Airpark, a luxurious office location. The project should be finished in 2020.
Rotterdam Airport is the most important regional airport in the Netherlands and processes more than one million passengers annually.

Public Transportation in Rotterdam

For the tram you can use the so-called "strippenkaart" that you can buy at the central station and at book shops.

For the metro you need the so=called "OV Chip Card". The anonymous card may be purchased at RET (external link) Sales & Information points as well as at ticket and credit machines. You can also purchase the card at post offices in Rotterdam and from a number of local newsagents. In addition, the card is available at the RET Webshop. The anonymous OV-chipkaart is immediately ready for use.
The anonymous OV-chipkaart costs € 7,50.

How does it work?

The OV-chipkaart is very easy to use.

Step 1: Crediting
In order to travel with an OV-chipkaart, you must first credit your card with a travel product and/or balance. A new ‘throw-away’ card has already been credited with a balance.

You can credit your OV-chipkaart at the RET ServiceShop and RET Sales & Information points. You can also credit your OV-chipkaart at the machines at the RET metro stations.

Step 2: Checking-in
You check-in by holding the card in front of the card-reader. It is then automatically scanned to see whether your card has a sufficient balance or is credited with a valid travel product.

Step 3: Checking-out
To check-out at the end of your journey, hold the card again in front of the card-reader. If you travel using your credited balance, then the travel costs are directly calculated. On those occasions when you change from one form of transport to another (e.g., from the metro to the bus), you are required to first check-out prior to checking in again.

With balances of less than € 0, you are not permitted to travel. When you travel using a credited balance, a boarding charge of € 4 is deducted on check-in. At the end of your journey, your actual travel costs will be calculated accordingly. So, if your travel costs are less than € 4, then the difference will be credited to the card when checking-out. Once you have checked-out, the cost of your journey will be calculated automatically
